What are wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to develop, and we usually see them emerge behind the second molars between the ages of 17 and 25. They come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and are unique to each individual.
If there is not enough space for the wisdom teeth to erupt normally, they can crowd other teeth, become misaligned and impact overall oral health.
When we remove a wisdom tooth, it is extracted from its socket in the bone. At Carrefour Dentaire de Montréal, we extract wisdom teeth if they are compromising oral health, or to prepare for other dental procedures.
Why should wisdom teeth be removed?
If wisdom teeth are causing problems for your oral health, they should be removed.
Specifically, we would remove wisdom teeth to:
- Maintain proper alignment of other teeth
- Alleviate pain and discomfort
- Address cysts, infections or tumours
- Prepare for orthodontic treatment
- Prevent crowding of other teeth
The Procedure
Tooth extractions are generally less painful today than they were in the past thanks to our access to sedatives, anesthetics and modern dental technology.
In many cases, extractions of wisdom teeth do not cause any pain or discomfort, and only minor bleeding. The surgeon will opt for a simple extraction if the tooth is visible in the mouth. A complex (surgical) extraction may be needed if the tooth is under the gum line.
Before extracting wisdom teeth, we numb the area surrounding the tooth with a topical and/or injectable anesthetic, potentially accompanied by intravenous sedation, to help ensure a patient is comfortable.
Once the teeth have been removed, your surgeon will discuss any required follow-up care.
